Wet Scrubber Fume Hood

What is a Wet Scrubber Fume Hood?

A wet scrubber fume hood (also known as a wet scrubber fume cupboard) is a specialized laboratory ventilation system designed to safely contain and neutralize hazardous fumes, gases, and particulates generated during chemical experiments or processes. Unlike standard fume hoods that simply vent air outdoors, wet scrubber models integrate a scrubbing mechanism to clean contaminated air before release, making them ideal for handling corrosive substances like acids, ammonia, or water-soluble gases. This reduces environmental emissions and protects workers, ductwork, and surrounding areas from exposure.

These systems are commonly used in laboratories, manufacturing facilities, and industrial workshops dealing with high-volume acid-based applications.

How Does It Work?

The core principle involves passing exhaust air through a water-based scrubbing process to capture and neutralize pollutants:

  1. Airflow Capture: Contaminated air from the workspace is drawn into the hood by a fan or blower.
  2. Scrubbing Chamber: The air passes through a packed bed (often made of polypropylene pall rings or similar media) where it's sprayed with a fine mist of water or neutralizing reagent. This traps soluble gases, mists, and particles.
  3. Separation and Drainage: An upper eliminator (demister) prevents water droplets from carrying over into the exhaust fan. Captured contaminants drain into a holding tank for recirculation or disposal.
  4. Exhaust: Cleaned air is then vented outdoors or recirculated, with minimal residual emissions.

Key components include:

  • Spray nozzles for mist generation.
  • Scrubbing media (e.g., plastic rings) for increased contact surface.
  • Water pump and recirculation tank.
  • Alarms for low water levels or airflow issues.

This process is highly efficient for acids (e.g., HCl, H₂SO₄) and particulates but less so for insoluble gases.

Wet Scrubber vs. Water Wash-Down Fume Hoods

While both use water, they serve different purposes. Here's a quick comparison:

Feature Wet Scrubber Fume Hood Water Wash-Down Fume Hood
Primary Function Neutralizes and removes harmful substances from the airstream before exhaust. Rinses interior surfaces (baffles, walls, ducts) to prevent buildup, especially for perchloric acid crystallization.
Water Use Continuous mist through packed bed for scrubbing. Sheet of water down surfaces; no packed bed.
Best For Acid fumes, soluble gases, high-emission processes. Perchloric acid work; prevents residue but doesn't scrub air as thoroughly.
Emissions Control High (filters out 90%+ of contaminants). Moderate (focuses on surface cleaning).
Duct Integration Often requires duct wash-down add-on. Built-in for perchloric-specific ducts.

Wet scrubbers are preferred for environmental compliance, while wash-downs are specialized for reactive chemicals like perchloric acid (which can form explosive chlorates in filters).

Materials and Design Considerations

  • Construction: Typically made of corrosion-resistant polypropylene (PP) or fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) to withstand acids. Steel is avoided due to rusting. PP handles temperatures up to 71°C; FRP up to 82°C.
  • Certifications: Look for EN-14175, ASHRAE 110, or CE standards for safety and performance.
  • Sizes and Features: Available in benchtop or walk-in models with options like VAV (variable air volume) controls, touch-screen interfaces for airflow monitoring, and low-noise fans.
  • Installation: Direct-mount to avoid contaminated ductwork; includes base cabinets for tanks.

Maintenance Tips

To ensure longevity and safety:

  • Daily: Monitor water levels and airflow; avoid high-heat operations beyond material limits.
  • Weekly/Monthly: Check for leaks, corrosion, or debris in ducts/housing; test alarms and pumps.
  • Periodic: Drain and replace sump water; inspect scrubbing media for clogging; record operating data.
  • Pro Tip: Secure the hood on a stable base and use only compatible chemicals to prevent damage.
