Laminar Flow Hood Cell Culture
A laminar flow hood, also known as a laminar flow cabinet or clean bench, is an essential piece of equipment in cell culture and microbiology labs. It provides a sterile environment to protect samples from contamination by filtering air through a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter and maintaining a unidirectional flow of air over the work surface.
There are two main types of laminar flow hoods used in cell culture:
- Horizontal Laminar Flow Hood:
- Air flows horizontally from the back of the cabinet towards the operator.
- Provides product protection by ensuring that only filtered air reaches the work area.
- Offers less protection for the operator because the air is directed towards them.
- Vertical Laminar Flow Hood:
- Air flows vertically from the top of the cabinet downwards.
- Provides better protection for both the product and the operator.
- More commonly used in cell culture due to its superior protection against contamination.
Use in Cell Culture:
- Sterility: Laminar flow hoods are crucial in maintaining a sterile environment for handling cell cultures, preventing contamination from airborne particles and microorganisms.
- Aseptic Techniques: When working in a laminar flow hood, aseptic techniques are employed to further reduce the risk of contamination, such as disinfecting surfaces, wearing gloves, and using sterile tools.
- Safety: Vertical laminar flow hoods, particularly those classified as Class II biological safety cabinets, also protect the user and the environment by filtering the exhaust air.
In cell culture, maintaining a sterile environment is critical for the success and reproducibility of experiments, making laminar flow hoods a vital tool in the lab.
